How Important are Sitemaps?
Sitemaps are extremely important. But don’t let that scare you. They are also very easy to make. A WordPress blog will make one automatically for you if you download a plugin (Simple Google Sitemap XML). Or you can make one on Google’s Webmaster Tools page. But you do in fact need a sitemap if you have a lot of pages and you want them to be indexed by Google and other search engines.
Don’t worry, it’s not that painful to make a sitemap. And it is very important to feed the monster (Google).
According to Amanda Watlington, Owner of Searching for Profit, “There’s not any reason today to have your content hidden under a barrel.”
Speaking on sitemaps specifically, Watlington tells WebProNews that people still do not understand how to use them, even though they have been around for 5 years. She has recently encountered multiple sites that have thousands of pages that are not getting picked up by the engines. The problem is that many of their pages have not even been visited.
